Meghalaya govt and Bangalore-based NLSIU to offer research fellowship for law students

On Monday, the Meghalaya government entered into an agreement with the National Law School of India University (NLSIU) based in Bengaluru to establish the PA Sangma Fellowship for Legal and Policy Research. This fellowship will enable NLSIU students to engage in research activities in Meghalaya, providing them with hands-on experience in addressing current legal and policy challenges. The initiative aims to offer capacity-building programs and training opportunities for law officers and government officials from various departments.

Law Minister James PK Sangma expressed that this fellowship would be a valuable learning experience for students, allowing them to transition from the classroom to understanding the practical implementation of law and policy challenges. PA Sangma, the fellowship’s namesake, was a former chief minister of Meghalaya and speaker of Lok Sabha. His son, Conrad, presently serves as the state’s chief minister, while another son, James, is a minister, and his daughter, Agatha, is a Member of Parliament.

Sudhir Krishnaswamy, the Vice-Chancellor of NLSIU, emphasized the importance of providing students with greater exposure to practical experiences, equipping them for the challenges they may encounter in the future.
